In Berlin, the "Platz des 9. November 1989" reminds of the day when around 20 000 people crossed the borders from the DDR at the checkpoint at the Bornholmer Straße. I still get goosebumps after all those years when I remember those days.
And today, around the corner you'll find cherry trees instead of The Wall. A Japanes television station had initiated a fundraising campaign and collected more than 1 million Euros to plant 10 000 cherry trees as a sign of hope and peace in Berlin and Brandenburg. I didn't see them in full blossom, but it was beautiful and touching anyway.

In Berlin erinnert der "Platz des 9. November 1989" an den Tag, an dem am Grenzübergang Bornholmer Straße 20 000 DDR-Bürgerin Richtung West-Berlin rannten. Auch nach all den Jahren bekomme ich eine Gänsehaut, wenn ich an diese Zeit zurückdenke.
Heute findet man dort um die Ecke Kirschbäume statt der Mauer. Ein japanischer Fernsehsender hatte zu einer Spendenaktion aufgerufen und mehr als 1 Million Euros gesammelt, um 10 000 Kirschbäume an geschichtsträchtigen Stellen in Berlin und Brandenburg zu pflanzen. Ich habe sie nicht in voller Blüte gesehen, aber es war trotzdem wunderschön und berührend.
